    Yeah - nailed it again, Tim. The flieger watches have lovely dials - and if anyone is thinking of getting one, get one with the thermally blued steel hands. The blued steel is lovely in different lights.

    The " Broad Arrow " mark is found on all British Military equipment. It's been used since the middle ages and is thought to represent the English archers of that period.
    Artefacts recovered from The Mary Rose, Henry VIII flagship, carried this mark. So it's one of the oldest military symbols that is still in use..and it puts Longinges ' trademark in its place !

    • @agw100100
      @agw100100 4 года назад +3

      I agree. Thanks, I didn't know it went back to Henry VIII . You replied whilst I was searching for an old ex WD (War Department) spanner with it on. It can be seen on many types of ex forces equipment, particularly items which may be "borrowed" (ie stolen) such as clothing or tools. The broad arrow logo also appears on the navigation/mapping triangulation points used by the Ordnance Survey who began official navigational mapping of the UK.

    • @alfredfrome9455
      @alfredfrome9455 4 года назад +8

      I have also seen the 'Crows foot' Broad arrow engraved in stone on some buildings around the old gunpowder factory in Waltham Abbey. Essex.

    • @ericgrace9995
      @ericgrace9995 4 года назад +4

      @@agw100100 I didn't know about the maps. Would they be War Department maps ?...Or maybe the WD commissioned them...

    • @agw100100
      @agw100100 4 года назад

      Yes. It dates back to June, 1791 according to history section of Ordnance Survey's own website. This tells of their military origin. It's 45 years since I used a trig point in earnest so I have just had a quick bike ride to my nearest one and can confirm that it has a cast metal plate, inset into the cement structure carrying the Broad Arrow.

    • @j.burgess4459
      @j.burgess4459 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, the origins of the broad arrow symbol are pretty old. However it wasn't used on absolutely all British military watches. Some of the RAF issued watches from the early part of WW2 had "A.M." stamped on the case-back instead - standing for Air Ministry. The watches issued later on in the war (and postwar during the 1950s and 60s) all had the arrow.

    Thanks, Tim for the great sum-up of a very interesting watch category.
    I did have several military watches over the years, I have to say my favorite were Stowa, Arsa, and Laco.
    I attempted to have a military watch from every era and was successful but at the end sold all the collection to get myself an Explorer II.

    Two more reasons I like military style watches are:
    1. Nostalgia for my time in the military.
    2. Big numbers with good contrast for my old eyes to read at a glance - so it's not so obvious I'm checking the time.

    Love my Stowa Flieger Klassic. Have the 36mm due to my toothpick wrists, but in full agreement there's just something about the simplicity of the Stowa that draws you in. And despite not being overly expensive, it starts more conversations with other knowledgeable watch owners than timepieces costing 10x as much. A lot of people have just never seen one in except in photos. I love knowing Im almost always the only one in the room with a Stowa.

    Yes, please do a part 2. A couple of suggestions: CWC watches (any of them) and the RAF navigator bicompax choronos from the early 70s, similar to Dirty Dozen, five manufacturers made the same design. CWC (one of the 5) sells a Valjoux recreation that's not cheap, but Newmark (a reboot of one of the 5) sells a recreation with a Seiko meca-quartz movement at a very low price - great watch.

    I own the Longines Heritage Military 1938. It is versatile enough to be worn both casually and for dress. It comes with two nice straps and a strap changing tool. I originally was looking at a Stowa or Laco B-Uhr and I found their dials and straps to be such that the versatility of these watches was much more limited than the Longines.

    I believe there were 5 original manufacturers of Beobachtungsuhr - you forgot IWC. I also love Stowa. They have so many beautiful watches. Have you seen the proportions on the new marine 36mm handaufzug with "kleiner sekunde" (peseux 7001 movement)? I would love to hear your opinion on that one. It seems so simple on the surface, but to me the restraint in design shows so many perfectly executed details.

    I do like the look of the 'Dirty Dozen' watches, this is why I was so disappointed with the Longines in your recent video at 43mm. I appreciate the pocket watch origins but it's not for me which is a shame because I would have liked to have a Longines in my collection. I had short listed the Stowa 36mm. but thought the dial too similar to my IWC flieger, after watching this I'm leaning towards the Hamilton. I grew up during the Vietnam era and remember it very well and feel I have more of a connection with it. Thanks for the review Tim.

    As you point out, the price point for the Seiko was a bad decision. The “old Seiko 5 Sports” produced an automatic movement military watch face in green with a green canvas strap and a 100 meter water resistance, about two years ago.Great readable dial. Has secondary military 2400 hour numbers below the large ones. At about $150 it is one of the true values I have purchased. If I had to reduce my collection to 4 watches, this one would stay.
